MS- DRG Overview

Posted in New MS DRG Outlook at 11:38 am by admin

Well we have now been coding for one month with the new MS-DRGs and I’m having fun with them.  I have not found them to be the monster that we were all anticipating.  Yes I have to query a little more because of documentation issues, however, I am finding quite a few of major CC without having to work too hard.  Such as ESRD (by the way have anyone else discovered that 585.6 count as Major CC with 403.01! You may be thinking when would I have 403.01 as principal?  When the patient is admitted with malignant hypertension with chronic renal failure that when!Has anyone else experience some interesting perks with the new MS-DRGs?  Remember that alcoholism and abuse went away as CCs however, withdrawal is a CC and thiamine deficiency is a CC.  At AHIMA national convention this year I was privilege to be at a presentation given by Dr. Kennedy and one of the things that he reminded us of is that if the patient is given thiamine this may represent a deficiency ( don’t forget to check your ED record for treatment given).Don’t forget to optimize your DRGs remember when multiple conditions were responsible for the admission and all are equally treated you will want to look at all of your options.  Quote:  I can be changed by what happen to me.  I refuse to be reduced by it.  Maya Angelou
